Mums are awesome
I love mums. I love dads too but I really do love mums, they’re the best.
You go through this total body transformation in pregnancy. You suffer the worst and the weirdest pregnancy symptoms, from pelvic pain to acute hearing (yep, it’s a thing).
You know the result is worth every second, and so you hold your head up high, and take it like a Queen.
And yet despite this Goddess-like serenity achieved in pregnancy (alongside the insomnia and sciatica), all too often labour and birth turns out to be shit. And sometimes it is not just shit ,but really shit. And in some cases it is really fucking shit, bordering on downright traumatic.
And it is not because you haven’t done your homework. You went to NCT and made a bunch of friends. You did the local hospital class and were introduced to the possible drugs on offer. You subscribed to the Baby Centre emails and knew exactly what piece of fruit your baby was equivalent in size to…
And yet when it came to birth, it all went to shit.
“I wish I had known you when I was pregnant…I really needed to go to a class like that.”
So many times I hear your birth stories and they are painful to listen to, let alone how difficult they must be to relay to me.
So many times I see the self-criticism, self-judgement and lack of confidence in your own bodies and mind as a result of this terrible birth experience.
So many times I see mums crippled with low self-esteem, loneliness, depression and in extreme cases PTSD because of your experiences in labour and birth.
You felt unsupported and misunderstood by your birth team.
You felt this overwhelming sensation of pain and just didn’t know how to deal with it.
You felt scared about the wellbeing of your baby and every decision that was made seemed to take you further and further away from your dream birth and towards your nightmare one.
You felt pushed into choices that you didn’t understand, or at least, didn’t appreciate what they entailed, and the consequences of making them.
And worst of all you felt totally and utterly out of control of your mind, your body and your birth.
I completely understand as that was me as well.
My first birth was totally shit and followed the exact path I describe above. All of it.
The magic formula to get a great birth
We’re all different. We think, speak, process and learn differently. We move differently. We deal with pain and sensations differently. We have and need different types of support.
So what is the secret?
Well, I don’t offer miracles but I do believe – very firmly – in the power of a positive birth.
And I believe – with every fibre of my being – that when you trust your innate birthing intuition and combine it with in-depth knowledge, informed decisions, powerful support, and the right mindset, that no matter what happens in your birth, you rise into a Goddess and experience the true awe of birth.
Yes that’s right. I really believe it. It might sound a bit woo but I actually experienced an awesome birth myself.
Yes, it was hard and painful (it’s called labour for a reason).
But I went into the room knowing EXACTLY what my body was capable of doing.
I knew EXACTLY what drugs I wanted and what I didn’t want (and why).
I knew EXACTLY how I was going to move my body, and if that felt wrong, what to try instead.
I knew EXACTLY how to breathe, to move, to be in any position.
I knew EXACTLY how to listen to my body and respond to its needs.
I knew EXACTLY how I wanted my birth partner to support me.
And, most importantly, I had unshakeable confidence in myself that I was going to nail it this time.
So, what did I do?
So I must have done something to have such a different experience the second time around, and you’re right.
I did everything different.
I read all the books about birth I could find, and the ones that resonated with me I read again (for me it was Janet Balaskas’s Active Birth).
I had psychotherapy to help me examine and then release the trauma I still held with me from my first awful birth.
I joined a pregnancy yoga class and started a conversation with my body that we are still having to this day.
I found an Active Birth class and attended it twice.
I got my birth partner involved by having a private couples Active Birth session where I showed him all the ways I wanted to be supported.
I used mindset techniques to shift into a state of confidence – real unshakeable confidence – about my ability to birth my baby.
I researched all the pain relief choices and interventions in birth – especially the ones I had experienced the first time around – and so I was more informed than the Obstetrician.
I researched and wrote firm and clear birth preferences.
I learned about my rights and choices in birth, and made damn well sure they were respected (in a nice way!).
I accepted the things about my birth that I could not control, and clung on hard to the things I could.
And I nailed it. I had a quick, easy, straight-forward and fucking awesome birth.
It was life-changing and empowering and instinctive and raw and primal and loving and yes, every bit of it was awesome.
So what should you do?
This incredible experience actually precipitated me to quit my job, retrain and set up Birthzang (ask me about the name another day!).
I saw for myself how amazing a positive birth could be, how it helped me heal from my shitty birth, but also how it boosted my confidence as a mother, and as a person.
It gave me a mission and a vocation: to prevent other mums from having to go through the first birth I had, and teach them how to have the second awesome birth I had.
My advice is simple. Just 3 steps. But these steps require work and commitment and they are only for people who are prepared to do a bit of work to get the results they want, and deserve.
And what are those 3 steps?
- Learn everything there is to know about the body in labour and birth, how to help it, how not to hinder it, and how to cope with it.
- Release the trauma and fear from your first birth that holds you back and prevents you from moving forwards.
- Build a new mindset of unwavering confidence, absolute positivity, high self-esteem and the tools to help you maintain it.
Well, in a way, yes that’s it.
And in another way, well no, obviously there is work involved in all of this. You have to be prepared to make changes to the way you think, feel and act. You have to be ready to start telling yourself different stories about your past and your future.
And most importantly, you need to be ready to say ,’Yes!”
Yes to a positive birth.
Yes to a fantastic birth.
Yes to an awesome birth.
Because I don’t want to meet you in 2 years and for you to say, “I wish I had known you when I was pregnant…”
It’s down to you now
You can do all of this work on your own. All the information and support is available out there in the wide world. Go forth and research. Google and You Tube are your best friends.
You can make changes in your mind and body, and teach yourself everything you need to know without having your hand held.
